The city of Easton has approved a settlement with the widow of slain police officer Jesse Sollman. Sollman was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow police officer inside police headquarters back in March 2005. WFMZ’s Joscelyn Moes has the details of the settlement.
» RERPORTER: Monday night Easton city council members unanimously approved a $5 million settlement. The announcement came after a closed-door meeting to discuss the details.
» REPORTER: With that, Easton City Council members reached an agreement..
» NAT: I believe this is in the best interest of the residents of the city.
» REPORTER: an agreement to pay $5 million to Carin Sollman.. the widow of slain police officer Jesse Sollman.
» MAYOR SAL PANTO: In light of everything I think the family deserves to be compensated and it’s something we can get behind us now and move on.
» REPORTER: Sollman was shot and killed by fellow police officer Matthew Renninger inside police headquarters back in March 2005. Later that year.. the case went to a grand jury. In March 2006.. the grand jury released its findings saying Renninger acted negligently.. but accidentally.
» CARIN SOLLMAN: I never believed that what happened that day was intentional or with malice. I always believed that it was accidental. But I believe it was an accident that never should have happened.
» REPORTER: A few months later Renninger resigned and took a pension. In March 2007.. Attorney John Karoly filed a $20 million lawsuit on behalf of his client.. Carin Sollman. Renninger, former mayor Phil Mitman, and others were named in the suit. Last month the city of Easton tried to have the case thrown out.. a judge later denied the motions. Now.. a settlement.
» MAYOR SAL PANTO: If we can bring it to frutation and get it finalized this week there will be a joint release between both parties later in the week.
» REPORTER: As for where the 5 million dollars is going to come from..
» MAYOR SAL PANTO: Right now the city is on the hook for the $5 million but we do have a third circuit ruling in our favor the insurance company has appealed it.
» The insurance company.. Scottsdale Insurance.. argues it shouldn’t be held responsible for paying the city. The mayor is hoping that issue can be settled by the beginning of next year so the city can be reimbursed.
